Data Safety Tipes

  - My data is lost, now what?

First of all, don't panic. Data loss is very common, but in nearly all cases, the data can be recovered by a trained technician. Only in the most severe cases of platter damage, magnetic degradation or a file over-write will the data be labelled as unrecoverable. With over years of data recovery experience, CITC has seen nearly every scenario of data loss and our successful rate of recovery speaks for itself.

  - Here are a few tips to help you minimize further data loss and increase your likelihood of data recovery on some of the more common types of data loss

Desktop PC's

  - If your system has "crashed" and you can no longer access the operating system or see the drive in the BIOS, then shut the system down immediately and do not run any further power through the drive by attempting reboots. This is considered a physical problem with the drive and is an extremely sensitive issue. If the headstack inside your drive has been damaged, you may cause further additional damage to the platter/s of the drive, upon which your data is stored. Contact a CITC representative and describe your problem.

  - If you have deleted a file or files or accidentally formatted your drive, then the most important thing to remember is to NOT write or install ANY new information onto that drive. Deleting files simply removes the locating tag of the file, but the file is still intact on the drive. If you add new data to the drive, you may over-write your lost data; losing it forever. Using advanced software, CITC technicians can re-assemble the binary code and restore your files.

  - If your partition has become corrupted, the most important thing to remember is NOT to attempt a re-install of your operating system or add new data to the drive. Again, CITC technicians can use specialized software and techniques to repair the partition and/or extract your data.

  - If you have deleted a partition, do not attempt to restore it by formatting the drive as this will only result in the addition of an empty partition. It will not recover your data.

  - If you believe you have been infected with a virus, shut the system down and contact a CITC technician. We may be able to help you identify the threat it poses to your data. You can also visit our Virus Encyclopedia, from a non-infected system, to see if you can determine the type of virus you have. This information helps CITC technicians be better equipped to assist you.

  - If you experience a single file corruption, be sure not to attempt creating a new file with the same name as this will partially over-write the file and will greatly decrease our ability to recover fully.

Remember, these are just a few of the more common reasons for data loss. Any attempts that you or even an IT technician make to recover the file or drive may result in a decreased quality of our recovery efforts or even make it impossible for us to recover the data. If you have any doubt, just ask yourself this question. "Am I prepared to move on without that data?". If you answered no, then contact a CITC representative by phone or email before making any attempts at a recovery. Data recovery is a highly specialized branch of computer science and should be left to those with experience and training to complete it successfully.

Turn your computer off and unplug it. Turn your computer off as soon as you have determined there is a problem. Don’t restart it until it has been inspected by an expert.

Do not use data recovery software until you have consulted with an expert. Generally speaking, data recovery software designed for consumer use should only be used for extremely simple cases. When using this type of software on severe problems it may aggravate the situation.

Do not reinstall software. Not even the Operating System. When you reinstall a program, or simply save something to your hard drive it could write over information you are attempting to recover.

Do not try to open your hard drive. The hard drive should only be accessed in a controlled environment and at that, using techniques approved by the manufacturer.

If you already opened the hard drive. Please replace the cover very carefully, don’t touch the disc, and let us know that it has been opened prior to our receiving it. Be aware that opening the hard drive will increase the recovery cost.

Data Recovery After Infection

If a filesystem went down due to the a virus attack and was subsequntly recovered, the files restored form the damaged volume will still contain dormant virus copies. These files should be cleaned before they enter the working system. The virus will lay dormant until you launch one of the infected files or open an infected document. Unless an infected file is opened, you are safe. However, recovered files are of no use if you cannot open them.

This is typically solved just as any other virus infection. You should run your usual antivirus software to check the files you've recovered. Some of the files may be corrupted and you may get a warning from the antivirus software notifying you that it was unable to analyze the particular file(s). These files should be deleted without attempting to launch them, because they are useless anyway and there is still a chance they may contain a virus. Another drawback is that antivirus software is usually not very robust in regard to damaged executables. This usually manifests itself as occasional AV scanner lockups.

A simplistic approach is to delete the executable files altogether. Usually most of the executables are readily available from their corresponding distribution disks and do not contain any data of interest. Valuable information is stored in data (document) files instead. So, just reinstall the software you need and put your data files back into the working environment. Take care with Microsoft Office documents though. They are somewhat unique in their ability to hold both useful data and virus code at the same time.

We advise to you treat any kind of data loss as virus-induced unless proven otherwise. This is simply because the question "what exactly went wrong" is often difficult to answer and we prefer to err on the safe side. The only exception is physical drive damage (no virus strain is known to damage a hard disk physically, at the time of this writing).
